Introduction to the Rhône: Appellation Focus Tasting Kit
Wines included
Ventoux Silica Rouge, Chateau Pesquié 2019 100ml
Châteauneuf-inspired Rhône red made from very ripe grenache and cinsault. Supple, soft and round with a lovely long finish on a note of strawberry and spice. Ventoux is an exciting appellation that due to its altitude brings real freshness into the wines.
Cairanne Haut Coustias, Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint Martin 2019 100ml
A big full-flavoured grenache, syrah and mourvèdre blend aged in oak for 24 months. This is full and spicy and it is from one of the best estates in Cairanne. Taken over by Château du Mont Redon, this estate is in good hands. The 2019 vintage is exceptional and is starting to enter its prime as the tannins have resolved.
Vacqueyras Variation, Domaine de Montvac 2019
From a mother and daughter duo, this estate in the heart of Vacqueyras produces wines with great character and a sense of place. Made from 100% old vines of grenache from a specific plot, this is a full-flavoured and spicy southern Rhône that is outstanding in the 2019 vintage. Lots of structure and concentration.
Gigondas Le Souiras, Clos des Cazaux 2019 100ml
A single-vineyard Gigondas planted with old vines of grenache. This was aged for thirty months in oak which gives it a certain patina of spice on top of the abundant fruit. Monumental in 2019 yet never unbalanced.
Beaumes-de-Venise Grangeneuve, Domaine de Saint Amant 2021 100ml
Saint Amant is the name of the mountain that overlooks this stunningly beautiful estate, perched on the mountainside at over 500m altitude. Gorgeous, ripe, full and fruity with notes of spice and dried fruit. Produced by a mother and daughter duo, this winery produces wines with real character and finesse.
Lirac Rouge La Fermade, Domaine Maby 2022 100ml
Bold Mediterranean flavours in this full-bodied red from the southern Rhône, the 2022 is richer and fuller than the 2021 yet it still shows great balance. Lirac is not the best known of the Rhône crus but it's just across the river from Châteauneuf and has similar soils. It's one of the best-value reds from the region. Expect lots of spice and brambles combined with tapenade notes.
