Beaujolais case
Wines included
The Society's Beaujolais-Villages 2023
The ultimate bistrot style-wine, this has intense and vibrant black-fruit perfume, a classic Beaujolais-Villages with good balance, vibrant red fruit and a ripe, yet fresh palate. Beaujolais has always been an ideal bistro wine and goes brilliantly with a wide variety of dishes, from charcuterie to fish, fowl and roasted vegetables. Delicious too, slightly chilled, with a baked Camembert or Brie and a baguette. The finest chickens make a top match for it too.
Morgon Maison Jean Marc Aujoux 2023
Morgon Maison Jean Marc Aujoux 2023
Fleurie, Domaine Montangeron 2024
A member favourite for many years, this is copybook, perfumed Fleurie delivering plenty of supple, ripe fruit. Perfect with roast chicken and other fowl. The Montengeron family have their vines close to the border with Morgon and their Fleurie needs a year in bottle to show at its best. It comes from a number of different vineyard parcels (Chamilles, Champagne and Rochaux) that all lie mid-slope (generally regarded as the best spot for vines), on sandy soils.
Chénas, Stéphane Aviron 2024
A stunning value cru Beaujolais from very old vines, the youngest of which were planted in 1913 on red granite soils. With a distinctive pencil-shaving-like aroma, which will appeal to lovers of cabernet franc, this displays ripe strawberry fruit and raspberry leaf on the palate, all delivered with wonderful liveliness and freshness. Aged in concrete tanks, preserving fruit purity, the tannins are chalk-powder fine.
The Society's Exhibition Côte de Brouilly 2025
At 300 hectares, the Côte de Brouilly is one of the smallest of the Beaujolais crus. Its soil composition includes diorite, which has volcanic origins, as well as the classic pink granites and some schist. This patchwork of geology typically yields wines that are structured and fuller in body than many Beaujolais. This wine offers great concentration of bramble and black plum, combined with spicy complexity and supported by firm but ripe tannins.
Beaujolais-Villages Marzy, Domaine de Mont Joly 2024
A joyful, energetic Beaujolais Villages, made with 50/50 whole bunch and destemmed fruit, which is bursting with ripe berries and cherries, with a herbal sappy edge and a fragrant peppery-spice character. A lovely follow-on from the 2023 vintage, which was the first vintage at The Society, this is more mineral in its expression, with powdery tannins and a tangy freshness. Jean-Baptiste Bachevillier is a young grower who does all the vineyard work himself, farming just under five hectares of vines now with organic and agroforestry-inspired methods. While he is the eighth generation of his family to make wine, he is the first since 1873 to own his vines – something he achieved before he was 30!
