Based in the old railway quarter of Haro, Muga is a fine old bodega, with its own cooperage. Indeed we believe Muga is making some of the very best Rioja available today. What Adi Badenhorst calls an ‘appellation Swartland’ wine, with an impressive - and annually changing - rollcall of different grape varieties coming together to make an exciting, multi-dimensional Mediterranean-inspired red blend. With syrah (58%) and cinsault (14%) providing the foundations in the 2021 vintage, tinta barocca, mourvèdre and grenache all join the party, and the combined effect is absolutely delicious. Mouthwateringly juicy with wild strawberry and black cherry fruit, rosemary, liquorice and black-pepper spice, this exudes energy and freshness in what was a fantastic, relatively cool vintage. Chiselled and linear with bright, pure fruit - still very youthful at five years' old.
