Italy Society Mixed Case
Wines included
The Society's Prosecco
Delicious, pure, dry Prosecco from the Adami family's best hillside vineyard, which require great dedication to work and tend. The flavoursome, balanced fruit they give are worth it. With aromas of pears and peaches, this light, zesty mineral sparkling wine is the ideal aperitif. Prosecco has long been a favourite of the Venetians, but now the secret is well and truly out! The glera grape thrives on the sometimes steeply sloped vineyards of the province of Treviso in Veneto, where Marisa Merotto and Cesare Adami`s artisanal winery is located. Yields here are naturally lower than those on the valley floors, giving a more intense style of wine.
The Society's Valpolicella Ripasso 2022
A fine example of Ripasso, where the wine is ‘passed over’ the dried grapes used to make Valpolicella’s famously full-throttle Amarone, turbo-charging its freshness with added depth. A Wine Champion for 2026, where it was described in the tasting room as ‘very Italian and very perfumed, with lots of character and balance; lovely sweet fruit on the palate.’
The Society's Chianti Rùfina 2022
Keep an eye out for more Rùfina Chianti's as this cooler subregion is proving a great bet with warming summers. Great-value and made exclusively for us by the Grati family, it has a cherry and leather scent, with a medium-body, and more red berry, dry leaves, and balsamic character on the palate. It's a marvellous choice to match with a beautifully baked pizza, from four seasons to four cheese.
The Society's Sicilian Reserve Red 2022
Our members love this bold yet balanced nero d'Avola, and its winning performance in our 2026 Wine Champions tastings showed why. ‘Soft, full and ripe’ with ‘plump black fruit and a hint of coffee’, it performs a brilliant balancing act between fruity generosity and oak-influenced spice and structure. Brilliant value.
The Society's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2024
A 2026 Wine Champion, this cherry-laden Italian favourite is now made for us by Contesa, whose above-and-beyond efforts in sustainability have earned them a place in our new Society’s Pioneers range. ‘Pure charm’ was the verdict here – if you haven’t tried it since it switched to its new source, we think you’ll like it! One of our Wine Society Pioneers, Contesa is rated in the top 100 most sustainable companies by their local government agency. They use pheromones to confuse local vine moths when they're mating as an alternative to chemical pest control, encourage wildflowers and grasses to attract pollinators and built a solar power plant on their winery roof which currently generates 50kW and covers 60% of their energy needs, and plan to build another 30kW of panels that will bring this up to 80%. Furthermore, Contesa use bottles produced entirely within Italy and of at least 58% recycled glass to reduce their carbon footprint.
The Society's Gavi 2025
The Society's Gavi is sourced from old vines of the cortese grape, grown in the gentle rolling hills of Piedmont, north-west Italy. Crowd-pleasing and characterful, this versatile unoaked wine has won many fans over the years. Aromatic and zesty on the nose with an appetisingly dry palate offering refreshing appley fruit, this makes a great 'house' white to enjoy with a wide variety of dishes. Hazelnuts are found throughout the Piedmont region that is home to Gavi, so much so that it is one of the the largest producing region for the nuts in Europe and hence their place on our label for the wine.
The Society's Pinot Grigio 2025
This elegant Italian pinot grigio, made exclusively for us by New Zealander Matt Thomson working with the Cantina di Verona co-operative, really hits the spot. With lemon and ripe conference pear on the nose, this is refreshing and bright with a crisp, slightly salty finish.
The Society's Sicilian White 2025
This unique blend especially created for The Wine Society is 80% grillo for lovely rich apricot and peach notes, with 20% carricante to lift the freshness while adding an elegant mineral note to the perfume. 2025 has created wines with real tension and good concentration. One of our Wine Society Pioneers for their work in sustainability, Rallo have been certified organic for 100ha of their own vineyards since 1994, among the first in Sicily to be so. They use only wild ferments and minimal sulphites, while the vines are drip irrigated, and water used in the facilities is purified and returned to the municipal system. Their electricity is 65% wind power, and they have plans to be 90% self-sufficient with the installation of solar panels. 10% of the estate is rewilded land, and the green cover between the vines no longer needs seeding and feeds grazing sheep in winter. All winery waste is recorded, they make compost from 50% of vineyard waste while the rest goes to a local distillery. All plastic, card and paper is recycled. 30 local families work here, while seasonal workers are hired direct, given contracts and paid into bank accounts, treating them the same as permanent staff. It's an impressive approach to be applauded.
The Society's Barbera d'Asti Superiore 2023
This barbera is from the beautiful Cascinone vineyard in Piedmont, Italy. Bursting with ripe juicy red fruit, this medium-bodied red has had time in large old oak casks, softening the tannins. A versatile food wine and particularly good with tomato-based dishes and the porcini mushrooms that are so integral to Piemontese cuisine and which we depict on the label.
The Society's Falanghina 2025
Falanghina is one of Italy's many native grape varieties that we feel shouldn't be left under the radar! With tangerine and yellow apple flavours, this is a lovely, lively, dry and expressive wine to add to your selection. Falanghina (pronounced fa-lang-GEE-na) is Campania's oldest grape, named after 'phalanx', a Roman troop formation, and offers delicious tangy freshness. This one is made for The Wine Society by La Guardiense, an important co-operative located in the mountainous Benevento region.
The Society's Primitivo 2024
This bright, unoaked, medium-bodied Italian primitivo was made especially for us by historic co-operative, Produttori di Manduria in Puglia. With notes of ripe blackberry and plum, fresh Mediterranean herbs and a touch of dark chocolate, this has refreshing acidity and is drier than many primitivos, making it brilliantly versatile at the dinner table.
The Society's Verdicchio Classico 2025
One of Italy's best buys, verdicchio makes vibrant, crisp and refreshing wines. This is from a beautiful and organic single vineyard and has a full, dry style, with grapefruit, lemon and mineral notes that slip down easily with or without food.
