South by South West Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 100ml
Livia Maiorana and Mijan Patterson produce fresh, elegant and beautifully balanced small-batch wines in the stunning region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Apart from their cult icon red, 'Super Margs', and a couple of parcels of excellent cabernet-merlot, they usually focus their attention on white wine production; however, in 2022 they wanted to make something special. This was the year they welcomed their daughter, Remi, into the world and also gained access to a parcel of premium-quality, 20-year-old cabernet sauvignon vines, in the highly regarded Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. They took it as a sign and decided to make this wine as a one-off in order to celebrate young Remi. This is cassis-laden, plush and silky wine with a beautiful combination of dark-fruit depth, hallmark cabernet bay leaf and the lifted elegance and fragrance of South by South West. Buyer Freddy Bulmer personally enjoyed a bottle of this wine on Christmas Day and was absolutely thrilled by the quality. It is only because of The Wine Society's great relationship with South by South West that we have been offered stock of this special one-off bottling and at this price it is unmissable. Other than via us, this is only available if you go to the winery itself and buy a bottle! When two-year-old Remi was asked what she thought of it, she said it smelled of 'purple chocolate.' Quite right!
Chianti Classico, Filetta di Lamole 2022 100ml
The terraced organic vines of Filetta, one of the original and highest sites of Chianti Classico at 600 metres, produces wine of rare fragrance and finesse and well-balanced silky flavour. Violet floral notes combine with bright blueberry and plum flavours, concentrated yet elegant with graphite on the fine finish.
Dog Point Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022 100ml
Vibrant in its youth, this pinot shows generous cherry, plum and redcurrant notes on the nose, all beautifully polished. The palate is lifted and succulent, with well integrated, fine-grained tannins and precise, focused acidity carrying the fruit flavours through to the finish. With time in a decanter savoury notes come through, and maturity will soften it into a plush, mellow pinot with notes of leather and forest floor complementing the fruit. This is one of the best examples of Marlborough pinot noir from a leading producer.
Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine Pochon 2022 100ml
Etienne Pochon makes a style of Crozes that is fruity and uncomplicated, delicious served cool and works well with grilled meats and fries. Etienne oversees all elements of production, ensuring that his wine shows all the soft, fragrant fruit that has gone into it.
La Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva, Rioja 2016 100ml
La Rioja Alta's gran reserva Arana is a sophisticated and complete Rioja made from tempranillo and 5% graciano. The excellent 2016 combines concentration with freshness and vibrancy. It is spicy with notes of mocha and dark plum and, as you might expect, a master example of brilliant oak ageing.
