Generation Series Wachenheimer Riesling 2021
More on the wine
Dry German riesling is part of the bedrock on which The Society was built. And what better example in today’s world than a riesling from Bürklin-Wolf? The relationship goes back before any mention in our archives; the people have changed, of course, and the direction of travel has changed too. At the helm today is Bettina Bürklin von Guradze who inherits a 400-year-old tradition, with riesling accounting for most of her production.
The company has grown into a cutting-edge operation. Quality has become Bettina’s obsession and their style is, almost without exception, dry. German wine law is complicated and probably outdated. Together with the VDP consortium of top estates, Bürklin led the initiative to clean up labels, taking Burgundian methods to rank vineyards by quality. Olivier Humbrecht of Alsace was a good friend who encouraged a gradual conversion to biodynamics.
We asked Bürklin to do something quite exclusive and special for us. It is an Ortswein or village wine and, naturally, we chose Wachenheim where they are so well placed.
Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf
The reputation of this famous estate was made in the 20th century by the formidable Dr Bürklin-Wolf with his great sweet wines. Under his daughter Bettina's guidance all the wines are now fully fermented out and dry, and the vineyards are farmed organically/biodynamically, without herbicides or pesticides. Bürklin-Wolf's greatest and longest living wines come from their splendid holdings in Forst; Pechstein, Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten, Ungeheuer with each producing riesling of remarkable individuality, reflecting their different soils of volcanic basalt. They also make delicious fine and charming wine from the Wachenheimer vineyards, particularly Gerümpel, and softer full-flavoured Ruppertsberger Geisbuhl.
