Barbaresco ‘I Ricci’, Rizzi 2020

Red Wine from Italy - Piedmont
4.000000000 star rating 9 Reviews
We were thrilled to see this wine emerge as a 2026 Wine Champion in our blind tastings. Enrico Dellapiana makes it exclusively for us following a tasting of his crus. The 2020 blend is 45% Nervo vineyard, 45% Pajore, 10% Boito and it's stunning. With ‘fresh cherry fruit, a hint of almond’, its firm yet ripe tannins support a plethora of pomegranate, red apple and black tea notes, all delivered with tension, poise and great class. This fine Piedmont nebbiolo was especially good when retasted, so do give it a decant before enjoying if you can.

Rizzi

The wines of Barbaresco are made from the same grape as Barolo, nebbiolo, but tend to be softer, more fragrant and immediately appealing, more ‘feminine’ than the sterner more ‘masculine’ virtues of the latter. Barbaresco is only a third the size of its neighbour Barolo, with only three communes, Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso. In a recent comparative tasting of wines of Barbaresco the wines of Rizzi were notable for their fruit and perfume.

The Dellapiano family have lived here since the 19th century but it was the grandfather who first bought land and the father who was first to bottle his own wine seriously. The family know their land extremely well and have a highly intelligent attitude to winemaking to make the most of their grapes.

Rizzi, named after one of the crus, is owned by Enrico Dellapiano and sister Jole, who own 35 hectares of vines on slopes both sides of the hill on top of which their winery sits. 15 hectares are planted with nebbiolo and their holdings lie in all three Barbaresco zones, including the four crus of Rizzi, Pajorè, Manzola and Nervo.

Great finesse and poise, offset by concentration and robustness, in this beautiful Barbaresco produced exclusively for The Wine Society. Brooding, seductive nose of plum, bergamot and Earl Grey. Fresh and dense fruit core of pomegranate, cranberry and blood orange. Assertive tannins, round and very well presented.

The family-run Cantina Rizzi, with winemaker Enrico Dellapiana at the helm, has produced this Barbaresco with delightful vigour and expression. Although elegant and light, we think this will age well. Reddish purple in colour with cherry and dark berry fruit on the nose, it is rich yet fresh, with a velvety texture, woody herbs, spice and berry fruit on the palate and a firm finish. Delicious!

Pale orangey ruby. Heady, classic Nebbiolo nose with more guts than many Barbarescos. Good autumnal flavours and grip on the end. This should disappoint no-one. Quite long.
