More on the wine

Inspired by the history of early Portuguese reds, this is a cross-regional blend of indigenous grape varieties from the 2021 vintage, combining purity and fragrance with inviting silky texture. Our early catalogues give us no indication of the origins of the Portuguese red wines listed simply as 'Full, dry', but it is our supposition that these early reds would have been cross regional blends, with different elements transported by cask for blending – as much a security for the winemaker as to ensure the best possible result.

For our 150th Anniversary wine, we wanted to try to recreate the style, eschewing an appellation for the wine in favour of the integrity of wines of the time. The obvious choice of partner was Niepoort, leaders in Portuguese wine production and known both for their innovative streak and their sheer love of Portugal’s indigenous grapes and classic regions. Discussions began with the charismatic, creative, restless and inspirational Dirk Niepoort and the project was brought to fruition by his son Daniel, by blending wine from three regions.

35% of the wine is baga from the Bairrada DOC, from Niepoort’s own winery at Quinta de Baixo; 20% is from older, mixed-plantings in the Portalegre region in north-east Alentejo, close to the border with Spain, made at a rented winery; the balance of 45% is from Niepoort’s Quinta da Lomba in the Dão region, also an older vine field blend. This wine combines purity and fragrance with inviting silky texture.

Interesting, convincing new wine conjured from a cross-regional blend of grapes grown in the Bairrada, Alentejo and Dao regions. Made by the renowned Niepoort family to celebrate 150 years of The Wine Society, it’s elegant, fresh and full of juicy red fruits, with a subtle sprinkle of woody herbs. I admire its fine balance; don’t expect a blockbuster but an unoaked medium-bodied red. Could be chilled lightly

Inspired by those wines that lay untasted in the cellars of the Royal Albert Hall 150 years ago, this is a cross-regional mix of indigenous grape varieties, some of which are field blends, from the 2021 vintage, crafted by Dirk Niepoort and son Daniel. The beguiling nose offers raspberry, sour cherry, pomegranate and delicate wafts of rosemary, there’s a lovely freshness to the crunchy, juicy, red-fruited palate, while the tannins provide a gentle pinch. Best served with a light chill, it’ll be a good choice when barbecue season arrives.

A tribute to the Portuguese cross-regional blends listed by The Wine Society in its earliest catalogues, this wine was produced in partnership with Dirk and Daniel Niepoort using fruit sourced from field blends in Portalegre, in Northern Alentejo (20%) and Niepoort’s Dão estate (45%) and the producer’s Baga vineyards in Bairrada (35%). The result is a fresh and characterful wine, perfect for everyday drinking and best enjoyed a bit chilled, led by an alluring nose of crunchy red fruit (sour cherry, raspberry, red plum, pomegranate). Linear and focused on the mouth with the succulent red fruit topped by notes of dried herbs and supported by zesty tannins.
