The Society's Chinon 2024

Red Wine from France - Loire
3.250000000 star rating 4 Reviews
Made for us by Maison Bougrier in the young, fresh 'brasserie' style we have been enjoying for a few vintages now, this Loire Valley cabernet franc has aromas and flavours of red and black fruits and a clean, juicy finish. It provides a pleasing match when enjoyed with classic bistro-style dishes like rotisserie chicken, rosemary-scented lamb cutlets, or a simple picnic of charcuterie and good cheese.

Bougrier

Maison Bougrier is a successful family-owned négociant company in the Loire founded in 1885 now run by the fifth generation of Bougriers. The company has significant domaine and winery holdings in three major areas: Touraine, Anjou and Muscadet giving it full control over vineyards, grapes and production in a number of sites.

The Touraine area produces whites from both chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc grape varieties. Bougrier’s premium white from Touraine is made from 100% sauvignon blanc grapes and was originally labelled for us as The Society’s Touraine Sauvignon, now sold under the Les Hauts Lieux label.

Domaine Guénault is one of the family’s own properties and situated on steep slopes overlooking the Cher river, which gives the grapes excellent sun exposure. The sauvignon here is grassy and scented and a popular choice as an aperitif.

Chinon is perfect for summer and produced from Cabernet Franc, a variety that I call the ‘Mr Benn of red grapes’ for its ability to adopt starkly different profiles according to where it’s planted. The Loire is its home and the place it shines brightest, and this well made example from Bougrier is berry-charged, crunchy and sappy with just the right amount of leafy freshness. Give this wine half an hour in the fridge to enhance its natural sense of freshness and serve it with a soft goat’s cheese and watermelon salad.
