More on the wine
Sustainability is crucial to the future of wine, but the concerns aren’t just environmental. It also incorporates social and financial sustainability, and we're keen to champion those producers going the extra mile in all three areas. Simonsig's sustainability credentials are impressive to say the least and include: the installation of water catchment systems to collect water throughout the farm; contribution to local conservation programmes; use of solar energy and the creation of their own compost. They also adhere to the Wine and Agricultural Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA), provide 50 staff houses including clean running water, electricity and social workers to support to workers and their families as well as educational facilities and a church.
Simonsig also founded Method Cap Classique in 1971 – South African 'bubbly' produced via the traditional method and classic Champagne varieties, chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. They provide outstanding examples at often unbeatable prices that we're sure will gain in popularity over the next 50 years. So Simonsig were an obvious choice for a vintage MCC to star in our final Generation Series release.
Simonsig Wine Estate
Simonsig is one of the most respected producers in the Cape wine industry, established in the 1950s just outside Stellenbosch. It is owned and run by the Malan family and winemaking is overseen by Johan and his son Michael.
Their wide range is perhaps best known for two wines: their highly regarded red Cape Blend, which pays tribute to Frans Malan, visionary patriarch and founder of Simonsig; and Kaapse Vonkel, the first South African sparkling wine made according to the traditional method, known in South Africa as Méthode Cap Classique, back in 1971 and therefore celebrating its - and the appellation's - 50th anniversary in 2021.
