This carignan is a new addition to Vanguardists 'Botanic' range and comes from Whites Valley, where gentle undulations at the base of the McLaren Vale hills bring lift and nuance to the fruit. In Michael J. Corbett’s hands this becomes something quite special. His fastidious, detail-driven approach and instinct for balance give the wine a precision and clarity rare for the variety. The nose is wonderfully seductive with creamy purple fruit, liquorice and an almost explosive violet perfume. There is intensity and darkness here, but also a sweetness and succulence that feel effortless. The palate is beautifully measured, rounded in texture yet carried by bright, lively acidity. A fine back-palate tannin provides shape, drawing out flavours of purple and black fruit and more of that vivid floral lift. The colour in the glass mirrors the style: a brilliant violet that speaks to the wine’s purity and energy. This is expressive, delicious carignan with Corbett’s unmistakable signature.
