Zephyr Marlborough Blanc de Blancs, Brut Nature 2019
Sparkling Wine from New Zealand - Marlborough
An utterly delicious traditional method sparkling wine which buyer Freddy Bulmer tasted when visiting Zephyr winemaker Ben Glover in late 2024. Even though at that stage it wasn't disgorged it was a wine that he spent the remainder of his trip thinking about and he knew he had to buy a parcel to share with Wine Society members. This was a wine produced as a bit of a one-off, in memory of Ben's sister. He wanted to make something particularly special so he gave the wine a whopping 64 months on lees (significantly longer than the 36 month minimum requirement for a vintage Champagne) which has given then wine time to develop a deliciously toasty aroma and broad palate, balancing perfectly with the focused acidity and bone-dry style of this zero dosage sparkling. The nose shows toasted brioche, chalky minerality and notes of quince, charred lemons, grapefruit and apricot skins. The palate is focused, with a fine bead of grapefruit acidity and very fresh green apple, which balanced with a chalky texture and generous autolytic character. A little twist of delicate sweet spices round off the finish. A complex, elegant and serious sparkler which tastes delicious now but will keep for many years more.
