  • La Parde de Haut Bailly Pessac Leognan 2016

A fitting wine to mark the 50th vintage of La Parde, this is an outstanding effort from a Bordeaux château that has been at the top of its game for many years. • Louis Jadot, Chorey-lès Beaune Les Beauxmonts (Domaine Gagey) 2015

2015 is a great vintage in Burgundy, with some of the highest values for colour and tannin ever recorded, so this will age for a long time. The tannins are remarkably sweet and velvety. Even quite modest wines like this Chorey have the vintage’s soft power from the sweet tannins. Jadot make quite a structured style of Burgundy from long macerations but then mature the wine for 18 months in barrel (many Burgundies of this level only get 12 months) to round out the tannins and develop the aromas.

The Matthiasson style is the anthesis of what might spring to mind when thinking of Californian chardonnay. At only 12% this beautifully elegant, oyster-shell, green-apple and lemon-pith scented wine has great energy and real balance. A very fine wine that isn't about showboating.
  • Jean-Marc Brocard, Chablis Premier Cru Butteaux 2020
