  • Madiran, Domaine Pichard 2015

Pichard is the most southerly estate in Madiran and curiously blessed with the coolest microclimate. The blend has a majority of tannat but only just because Pichard give unusual importance to cabernet franc. The result is fragrant and robust, and will benefit from another two to three years at least to unravel.
  • Gigondas Pierre Aiguille, Paul Jaboulet Aîné 2017

A mighty, rich and full-bodied Gigondas from Jaboulet brimming with lovely ripe-fruit flavour. This Rhône red will then provide lovely drinking over the rest of the decade.
  • Spier Creative Block 5, Coastal 2016

A South African take on the classic five varietal Bordeaux blend, this is a bold red with dark fruit and chocolate notes complemented by more classical secondary cedar, tobacco and spice flavours on the palate. The Creative Block range is based on two, three, or in this case five varietals from selected vineyard blocks in Darling and Stellenbosch and named after the Spier Arts project which supports local artists.
  • Miles Mossop 'Max', Stellenbosch 2016

Miles Mossop's Max is now in its 13th successful vintage. Always cabernet-led, always with a significant proportion of the denser, spicier petit verdot, alongside fresher, sweeter red fruit merlot, Max - named after Miles' son - is now firmly established within the Cape fine wine firmament. And now that Miles has left his long-term day job at Tokara to better focus on his own wines, we can expect it to continue on its upward trajectory.

  • Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2015

The Thelema estate are confident that this is one of their best ever cabernets, made as it is with fruit from the great Cape vintage of 2015. A hint of menthol is complemented by touches of cedar, tobacco and graphite on the nose, with elegant structure and lovely freshness on the long palate.
  • Yalumba Hand Picked Eden Valley Shiraz-Viognier 2015

This is a hugely concentrated wine from South Australia, with great fresh acidity and structure supporting the deep blackcurrant, violet and black-peppercorn spice. The hand-picked old-vine shiraz is co-fermented with 2% of the white grape viognier which really lifts the perfume, giving a full-bodied wine a touch of elegance. Perfect for the cellar.

  • Château Fonplégade, Saint-Emilion 2015

  • La Parde de Haut Bailly Pessac Leognan 2016

A fitting wine to mark the 50th vintage of La Parde, this is an outstanding effort from a Bordeaux château that has been at the top of its game for many years. Equal parts merlot and cabernet sauvignon, and 6% cabernet franc, combine to produce a wine of real pleasure. Fresh, vibrant and elegant.
  • Louis Jadot, Chorey-lès Beaune Les Beauxmonts (Domaine Gagey) 2015

2015 is a great vintage in Burgundy, with some of the highest values for colour and tannin ever recorded, so this will age for a long time. The tannins are remarkably sweet and velvety. Even quite modest wines like this Chorey have the vintage’s soft power from the sweet tannins. Jadot make quite a structured style of Burgundy from long macerations but then mature the wine for 18 months in barrel (many Burgundies of this level only get 12 months) to round out the tannins and develop the aromas.
  • Baron de Brane, Margaux 2015

Henri Lurton has made what is probably his best ever ‘Baron’ in this classic Margaux vintage. With 57% merlot, 39% cabernet sauvignon and 4% cabernet franc the wine has generous plumpness of fruit and silky tannins. A highly satisfying wine that will be approachable from an early age. 2020–2028.
  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château La Nerthe 2016

La Nerthe surely stands as one of the greatest estates in Châteauneuf and, under the direction of Ralph Garcin, it is making some outstanding wine. This exceptional 2016 vintage combines power and elegance to perfection.

  • Hamilton Russell Estate Chardonnay, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 2020

One of the Cape's most celebrated and finest chardonnays, made in an elegantly restrained barrel-fermented style, here in a fine vintage. It's drinking beautifully now but it's a wine with a long record for keeping too.
  • Matthiasson Linda Vista Vineyard Napa Chardonnay 2020

The Matthiasson style is the anthesis of what might spring to mind when thinking of Californian chardonnay. At only 12% this beautifully elegant, oyster-shell, green-apple and lemon-pith scented wine has great energy and real balance. A very fine wine that isn't about showboating.
  • Jean-Marc Brocard, Chablis Premier Cru Butteaux 2020
