  • Château Fonplégade, Saint-Emilion 2015

  • Réserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac 2015

A refined and polished second wine from one of the outstanding châteaux of the 2015 vintage. A delicious Réserve de la Comtesse, with elegant fruit structure coated in a jacket of svelte tannins.
  • Château Giscours, Margaux 2014

An impressive Giscours, with 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 10% petit verdot adding depth and spice. Lovely fresh red-fruited Bordeaux with a more classically styled savoury palate, this is a wine for the traditional claret lover.
  • Château La Pointe, Pomerol 2016

Dense, plush merlot fruit and fine-grained tannins are the hallmarks of this year’s La Pointe, an estate that goes from strength to strength under Eric Monneret’s skilful direction. A classic Pomerol.

  • Château Beau-Site, Saint-Estèphe 2014

Saint-Estèphe was amongst the most consistent of communes in 2014. The Castéja family’s Beau-Site is a fine example of a fully ripe cabernet sauvignon-dominated wine, displaying vibrant, scented cassis-fruit on the palate. 2018–2028.
  • Château Chasse-Spleen, Moulis-en-Médoc 2015

A notable success this year, the wine has crimson colour, with a perfumed cabernet nose and plenty of substance on the palate. Grainy tannin texture rounds off a complete and harmonious wine which will develop substance and complexity in time. 2025–2035.
  • Lacoste Borie, Pauillac 2015

Joining the 2009 vintage of the grand vin Grand-Puy-Lacoste on our Wine Champions podium in 2020, this charming vintage of the property’s second wine proved to be an excellent-value Pauillac, impressing with its approachable, supple, fleshy and open style.
  • Château de Fonbel, Saint-Emilion 2016

The vines thrived this year, despite the dry summer, thanks to de Fonbel’s predominantly clay soils. The wine is fragrant and perfumed, with notes of chocolate and coffee on the nose, and attractive berry fruit on the palate. 2021–2030.

Drinking window 3-5 years
Bottle price £15-£20
Monthly cost £35.00

Example Wines included in our Small Wonders plan

  • Madiran, Domaine Pichard 2015

Pichard is the most southerly estate in Madiran and curiously blessed with the coolest microclimate. The blend has a majority of tannat but only just because Pichard give unusual importance to cabernet franc. The result is fragrant and robust, and will benefit from another two to three years at least to unravel.
  • Gigondas Pierre Aiguille, Paul Jaboulet Aîné 2017

A mighty, rich and full-bodied Gigondas from Jaboulet brimming with lovely ripe-fruit flavour. This Rhône red will then provide lovely drinking over the rest of the decade.
  • Spier Creative Block 5, Coastal 2016

A South African take on the classic five varietal Bordeaux blend, this is a bold red with dark fruit and chocolate notes complemented by more classical secondary cedar, tobacco and spice flavours on the palate. The Creative Block range is based on two, three, or in this case five varietals from selected vineyard blocks in Darling and Stellenbosch and named after the Spier Arts project which supports local artists.
  • Miles Mossop 'Max', Stellenbosch 2016

Miles Mossop's Max is now in its 13th successful vintage. Always cabernet-led, always with a significant proportion of the denser, spicier petit verdot, alongside fresher, sweeter red fruit merlot, Max - named after Miles' son - is now firmly established within the Cape fine wine firmament. And now that Miles has left his long-term day job at Tokara to better focus on his own wines, we can expect it to continue on its upward trajectory.

  • Elk Cove Vineyards Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2015

  • Contino 935 Reserva, Rioja 2015

This exquisite Rioja displays wonderfully exotic flavours backed by high-quality oak ageing and a structure built for a long and delicious life. This classic blend of around 90% tempranillo (with a 10% mix of graciano, mazuelo and garnacha) is spicy and full with wonderful vanilla notes from the oak. 2020–2031.
  • Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2015

  • Olivier Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères 2016

Enseignères is a very well-placed vineyard, situated just below Burgundy grand cru Bâtard-Montrachet. This comes from a 1ha parcel where Leflaive manage the vineyard, where the yield was reduced to 40hl-ha due to frost, and there is a lovely tension between appley freshness and honeyed richness.
  • Domaine William Fèvre, Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 2016

Although not the best-known Chablis cru, this really is a great success: a 50% barrel-fermented wine with attractive white-peach aromas and hallmark grand cru structure and weight on the palate. We encourage you to try it!
  • Louis Jadot Chassagne Montrachet PC Abbaye de Morgeots (Jadot) 2015

Louis Jadot Chassagne Montrachet PC Abbaye de Morgeots (Jadot) 2015
  • Maison Roche de Bellene, Meursault Chevaliers 2016

Chevaliers is one of Meursault's ‘deuxièmes crus', a village Meursault but planted on the sloping hillside which produces more concentrated and fresher-tasting wines than those on the flatter lands. Like an apple baked with butter, this is a lovely amalgam of richness and freshness.

  • Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes, Delas 2015

  • Réserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac 2015

A refined and polished second wine from one of the outstanding châteaux of the 2015 vintage. A delicious Réserve de la Comtesse, with elegant fruit structure coated in a jacket of svelte tannins.

Example Wines included in our French Classics - Level 1 plan

  • La Parde de Haut Bailly Pessac Leognan 2016

A fitting wine to mark the 50th vintage of La Parde, this is an outstanding effort from a Bordeaux château that has been at the top of its game for many years. Equal parts merlot and cabernet sauvignon, and 6% cabernet franc, combine to produce a wine of real pleasure. Fresh, vibrant and elegant.
  • Louis Jadot, Chorey-lès Beaune Les Beauxmonts (Domaine Gagey) 2015

2015 is a great vintage in Burgundy, with some of the highest values for colour and tannin ever recorded, so this will age for a long time. The tannins are remarkably sweet and velvety. Even quite modest wines like this Chorey have the vintage’s soft power from the sweet tannins. Jadot make quite a structured style of Burgundy from long macerations but then mature the wine for 18 months in barrel (many Burgundies of this level only get 12 months) to round out the tannins and develop the aromas.
  • Baron de Brane, Margaux 2015

Henri Lurton has made what is probably his best ever ‘Baron’ in this classic Margaux vintage. With 57% merlot, 39% cabernet sauvignon and 4% cabernet franc the wine has generous plumpness of fruit and silky tannins. A highly satisfying wine that will be approachable from an early age. 2020–2028.
  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château La Nerthe 2016

La Nerthe surely stands as one of the greatest estates in Châteauneuf and, under the direction of Ralph Garcin, it is making some outstanding wine. This exceptional 2016 vintage combines power and elegance to perfection.
