Following the success of last year’s First Release from The Royal Tokaji Company, we can bring you the estate’s latest releases, including a rather special and rare offering of their liquid gold, Essencia. The diversity of styles produced from the volcanic slopes of Tokaji can be truly remarkable, especially from this leading winery, and are worthy of exploration.

The Vineyard Selection Dry Furmint 2024 comes from a relatively sunny vintage, yet the wine’s precision and tension is truly delightful and a reminder of the energy that furmint from Tokaji can bring. Their prestigious first-growth single-vineyard Szent Tàmas, overlooking the winery in Màd, is only available in magnum, and comes from an outstanding vintage that delivers a real sense of place in the glass.
We are also offering their Essencia 2017, for those with an incredibly sweet tooth, or that are intrigued to taste this extremely labour-intensive and limited-production elixir. This wine is made very infrequently and only 4,700 37.5cl bottles of the 2017 were produced. Each berry is hand-picked at the painfully slow rate of 5kg per day per person and 40kg are needed for a 37.5cl bottle. Made exclusively from the free-run juice of Aszù-affected berries, and took three years of fermentation to reach 2% alcohol! Due to its unctuous nature is served on crystal spoons to enjoy.
I would certainly recommend the By Appointment #10, Aszú 6 Puttonyos for those seeking a compromise in terms of sugar levels and price, with this 2013 from an exceptional vintage showing the wine’s vibrancy and complexity.
This First Release should appeal to lovers of both dry and sweet wines and those keen to try one of the world’s rarest wines.
