By Appointment #10, Tokaji Aszú 6 Royal Tokaji 2013 37.5cl
Code: HU2402
White
This is an exceptional Aszú wine, made even more special as no Aszú wines were produced in the three years prior, and very little in 2009. The quality was very high and volumes were equally as promising. This is a selection of the winemaker’s favourite barrels, three of which were selected to go into the By Appointment range. The wine was aged in barrel for 23 months prior to bottling and the grapes here are exclusively owned by Royal Tokaji. Only 2,400 bottles were produced. This wine has so much energy, the acidity is racy and balances the sugar to perfection. Apricots, honeysuckle and ginger with fleshy peach and mango notes. At 180 grams/ litre residual sugar, this is slightly sweeter than Sauternes. Drink this year to 2040. 10%

Half Bottle of Essencia, Royal Tokaji 2017
Code: HU2422
White
One of the rarest wines produced, Essencia is referred to as the 'liquid gold' that slowly comes from Aszu (botrytised) grapes. Painstakingly low quantities are produced – only 4,770 bottles in 2017 – with a sweetness of 557 grams/ litre (more than 3.5 times that of Sauternes) and only fermented to 2% alcohol. Only the finest berries that had Aszu (dried, botrytised grapes) are harvested in the autumn and were placed into containers where the free run juice was released and then slowly fermented over three years to produce this incredible nectar. There is an intensity of candied peel, marmalade and quince with plenty of ginger, saffron and passionfruit. Unctuous and sweet, yet the acidity pierces through to bring vibrancy and electricity to the palate. This Essencia comes with a crystal spoon, a more practical way to serve this wonderfully historic wine. Drink this year to 2060. 2%

Vineyard Selection Dry Furmint, Royal Tokaji 2024
Code: HU2411
White
This bone-dry white wine from one of Tokaj's most famous wineries is a selection from their most prized classed-growth vineyards in the village of Mád. The grape selection comes from 4 vineyards, Tamás, Nyulászó, Betsek and Úrágya with their varying soil types adding layers of complexity to the wine. 2024 started incredibly warm and continued until the summer, where temperatures cooled and while you feel a ripeness of fruit aromas, there is a restrained concentration and a zesty and crisp acidity that cuts through the palate. Thanks to the heavily volcanic soils, there is a mineral backbone that delights. Aged for nine months in 300 and 500-litre barrels, of which 25% new oak, expect a spicy note and creaminess to balance the purity and linear character of the furmint grape. Drink this year to 2032. 13%

Magnum of Szent Tamás Dry Tokaji Furmint, Royal Tokaji 2022
Code: HU2394
White
The highly revered Hungarian First Growth vineyard of Szt. Tamás is one of the most expensive vineyard sites in Hungary. Its complex soils of red clay and volcanic rock produce a wine that is firm and structured with plenty of ageing potential. The 2022 vintage comes exclusively in magnums and has produced a wine that displays power and concentration, while minerality and saltiness play their part in producing a very sophisticated white. Expect notes of mandarin and spice with a flinty, stony finish. Drink this year to 2040. 14%
