The 2022 growing season in the Barossa brought cooler and milder conditions than usual, with a slower, steadier ripening period. While yields were lower, this gave the fruit plenty of time to build flavour and retain freshness, resulting in a wine that’s elegant and aromatic, with fine tannins, lifted dark fruit and a savoury backbone of spice and cedar.
Aged for 18 months in French and Hungarian oak (21% new), the 2022 is true to the Yalumba style: polished, structured and built to age, yet approachable in its youth. It’s a wine that shows that top-class Australian reds can bring real presence without sacrificing detail and the fact is that the price belies the quality, pedigree and reputation of this world-class red.
Each release of The Signature is dedicated to someone who has made a meaningful contribution to the Yalumba story. The 2022 vintage honours Paul Midolo, who retired in 2023 after 29 years of service. From his early days in Queensland to his role as Executive Director of Sales in Australia and New Zealand, Paul’s warmth, humour and wisdom helped shape Yalumba into the exceptional business it is today.
