Adega de Pegões
This successful co-operative, located south-east of Lisbon, was formed in 1958, and today it is responsible for 1100 hectares of vines owned by 148 growers.
They grow a mixture of local grapes – like touriga nacional, trincadeira and castelão for red wines – and international varieties like muscat, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. The ancient sandy soils here formed over millions of years from sand deposited by the Tagus and Sado rivers.
The company’s modern winery, overseen by talented winemaker Jaime Quendera, has received several million euros of investment in recent years. As well as a range of temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats and oak barrels, it boasts modern equipment such as pneumatic presses and state-of-the-art bottling and labelling facilities.
