Alinea Grenache, Citrusdal Mountain 2025
Red Wine from South Africa - Olifants River
Natasha Jacka is the woman behind Alinea, which is the Latin word for the beginning of a new train of thought. She studied to be a chef and worked in a number of the Western Cape’s top restaurants, including The Test Kitchen, but a growing curiosity for wine led her to do her first harvest in 2017 at Cape Point Vineyards and from there she never looked back. Enrolling at Elsenburg agricultural college in 2018 and graduating in 2020, she had established Alinea and was making her own (very) small batch wines by 2021 – always from varieties that intrigued her and sites that moved her. She started working with this grenache from Piekenierskloof with the 2024 vintage, a dryland bush-vine vineyard planted in 2000 and 2012 respectively. Made with 60% whole bunches, this has a gorgeous nose which is floral as well as spicy, with rose petals, white and pink pepper, strawberries and raspberry compote. The fruit is luminous and lively but not light; there is a fine chalky tannin presence that makes itself felt on the deliciously dry and sapid finish.
