White Wine from New Zealand - Nelson
It's a little known fact that Austria and New Zealand produce roughly the same amount of wine and a better known fact that both countries boast stunning scenery and a good combination of sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Grüner veltliner may be very much at home in Austria, as the country's most important native grape variety, but it can work very well in New Zealand too, as evidenced here. Still with the signature peachy fruit and twist of white pepper, this example from Nelson shows a little more opulence and juiciness than its often more mineral-driven Austrian counterpart. Refreshing, charming, great with or without food and perfect for anyone looking to try something new without veering too far from a familiarly 'New Zealand' flavour profile.
