Austrian Reds Case
Wines included
Birgit Braunstein Ried Glawarinza Leithaberg Blaufränkisch, Burgenland 2017
Birgit Braunstein's blaufränkisch from Austria is a pure, medium-bodied, minimal intervention red wine which stylistically sits somewhere between pinot noir and merlot. The 2017 shows vibrant red fruit character and surprisingly fresh acidity. Decant and drink now for freshness and lift or age for complexity and depth.
Bründlmayer Pinot Noir, Langenlois 2017
Elegant, perfumed Austrian pinot noir with aromas of redcurrant, cherry and cranberry, along with deliciously enticing savoury hints of fresh earth, cured bacon and almonds. The palate is silky and fresh with precise acidity which holds together layers of flavour and ample grip from the tannins. The red fruit and savoury notes continue and are joined by a plethora of spices, all the while remaining light, lifted and with great finesse.
Rainer Wess Zweigelt-St Laurent, Kremstal 2020
A charming red blend of Austria's zweigelt and St Laurent varieties. There are notes of redcurrant, balsamic strawberries, sloes and damsons on the nose and a palate at first reminiscent of biting into a juicy ripe cherry, followed by pancetta, black pepper and mocha notes. A must-try for lovers of serious Beaujolais or pinot noir.
