Barbagia Rosso 'Ghirada Garaunele A', Esole 2022
Red Wine from Italy - Sardinia
Esole Winery is run by siblings Federica and Francesco Dessolis and is part of the 'new wave' of Sardinia's wine scene. Federica is the winemaker and her star-studded CV includes a stint at none other than the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy. She approaches cannonau – as grenache is known on Sardinia - with the same sensitivity as pinot and this yields captivating results. Made with 20% whole clusters in the fermentation, this exudes elegance, with flavours of wild strawberries and peppery spice. The tannins are fine but don't be fooled, there is quite a substantial amount of grip here, potentially attributable to the granitic soils of Barbagia. As Federica and Francesco don't believe the requirements for the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC are exacting enough from a quality perspective, they prefer to label their wine as IGT Barbagia Rosso.
