Medium-bodied minimal-intervention Austrian wine which sits somewhere between malbec and sangiovese. Black-fruit, cherry and plum aromas lead to vibrant, fresh rhubarb, blackberry crumble and black pepper. Decant. We’re delighted to name Birgit a Wine society Pioneer for her efforts in farming and working sustainably, organically and following biodynamic principles, with goats, chickens and sheep kept on her land. Her dedication to making wines of natural grace, intensity and vibrant purity, is reflected in her hands-off approach, fermenting using only natural yeasts, neither fining nor filtering before bottling, often in washed and reused bottles, and using as little sulphur as possible. Her compost used comes mainly from her hay-fed animals (the dung attracting insects and spreading seeds) and she keeps bees in a protected natural site where rare herbs grow. She has a worm farm, has planted trees and hedges to encourage biodiversity, maintains old trees and perches for birds of prey encourage biodiversity on the land. Vines grow only on part of the estate, with other land given over to growing fruit trees. She is also committed to her local community and staff, with long-term contracts and a firm conviction that what she gives will come back to the estate as they grow. She also co-founded the first Waldorf School in Burgenland, and Birgit’s is a Greencare winery, offering people with health issues or young people without direction to stay and surround themselves with nature as a healing mechanism, with tai chi and jigong retreats available with cultural events. All in all, it’s a celebration of life.

History
Birgit is a woman with winemaking in her blood – her family have owned vines here for 400 years – and a determination to make something remarkable. She owns 22 hectares close to Leithaberg, with vines at some of the highest altitudes in the area, and she farms organically, following biodynamic principles since 2000. Indeed, she takes a holistic view on life in general, and keeps goats, chickens and sheep on her land, and positivity is a watchword for Birgit, illustrated by positive messages chalked on blackboards in the cellars.

Her dedication to making wines of natural grace, intensity and vibrant purity, allowing them to show the grapes' innate characteristics and a wonderful sense of place, is reflected in her cellars where she has a hands-off approach, fermenting using only natural yeasts and neither fining nor filtering before the wine goes into bottle.
