Château Fonbadet

This fine Cru Bourgeois property consists of some fine vineyards across the Pauillac appellation, with three hectares a short walk from Château Lynch-Bages, another 13 close to Mouton-Rothschild to the north, and four hectares near the southern tip of the commune, close to Châteaux Latour and Pichon Comtesse. The Peyronie family have owned the estate for four generations, and they have deep roots in the area. Today Pascale Peyronie has taken over from her father Pierre to run Fonbadet after spending 20 years working alongside him, with renowned consultant Michel Rolland now advising.

The soils across the estate are the deep gravels that characterise the finest terroirs here, allowing the vines to root deeply, drain well in the wet and access moisture when dry. Plantings are 60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 5% made up of both petit verdot and malbec, with an average vine age of fifty years. These are farmed without pesticides or herbicides and harvested at yields that are among the lowest in Pauillac, all picked by hand plot by plot, with sorting on tables in the vineyards and again at the fermentation room to ensure that only the best fruit reaches the vats. Maturation is also traditional, with 30% new oak, for 18 months.
