Christina & Rainer Wess 'Tochter & Vater' Grüner Veltliner 2024

'Tochter & Vater' is a delicious entry point to a new range from the outstanding father and daughter duo of Rainer and Christina Wess. It's a charming, yellow-fruit-laden wine, fresh with the fragrance of peaches, sappy pine, zesty lemon and a hint of apricot. The palate is crisp, dry and refreshing with a generosity of fruit, where the lemony zip and juicy peach flavours make the mouth water. The finish remains crisp and surprisingly long. A lovely wine to pair with food, particularly fried/roast chicken, rich creamy dishes or soft cheeses. Equally delicious, however, on its own. A celebration of coming together, new starts and a wonderful father/daughter team. Christina Wess is a young and talented winemaker, whom we have been following for a few years now. She started studying winemaking at just 14 years old and had worked vintages in a number of different regions, including Burgundy, before joining her father at their family winery which at the time was Weingut (Rainer) Wess. After the acquisition of the estate by investors Christina and Rainer ultimately left left the business. While they may have lost any rights over what was their first and their family project and its vines they have started afresh with Weingut Christina & Rainer Wess, and have moved into a small cellar just over the bored from Kremstal, in the Wachau region; a somewhat full-circle move for Rainer. Recognising that this father and daughter duo risked embarking on this new project without any wine to sell, many neighbours opened up access to tanks in their own wineries, allowing Rainer and Christina to select what they felt suited their style and get to work blending. The result is a 2024 vintage made thanks to the generosity of a whole community and is a fabulous example of the good side of wine, which is a celebration of the good of humanity.
