Koyle Cerro Basalto Cuartel G2 Carmenère 2016
'One of the best carmenères I have tasted,' is the verdict of our Chile buyer, Toby Morrhall. 2016 is an excellent vintage at Koyle. Cerro Basalto is a hillside vineyard of low-fertility soil, hence the natural concentration, and is in a coolish spot for carmenère so this is ripe but fresh. A small percentage of cabernet franc contributes a cedary note to the flavour.
Koyle Los Lingues Single Vineyard Alto Colchagua Reserva Carmenère 2015
From a superb estate in the hills above Los Lingues in Chile's Alto Colchagua, this intense and spicy carmenère is one of the most interesting and distinctive examples we have tasted. Grown in a coolish area for this variety, it shows hints of black pepper and cloves, with a full yet fresh palate.
Primus Colchagua Carmenère 2014
Ripe, fleshy, sensuous Chilean carmenère but lifted by an appealing freshness so it is moreish and not too heavy.
Tabalí Micas Peumo Carmenère 2014
From a vineyard planted in 1957, this is a superb, silky textured carmenère, with sweet tannins, ripe fruit and an exquisite cedary perfume.
The Society's Exhibition Colchagua Carmenère 2016
This is made for us by Koyle from a hillside vineyard in a coolish spot for this variety in Alto Colchagua. 2016 is Koyle's best vintage so far, picked before the rains came, and here they have made an intensely flavoured wine with a ripe yet fresh palate of black fruit, with notes of clove and of black pepper. Matured in barrel for about 18 months,
Undurraga Candelabro Carmenère 2017
A lovely red from the warm Cauquenes area of Chile. The carmenère grape needs heat to fully mature and so the warm 2017 vintage produced full and ripe wines with soft and generous palates.
