White Wine from Austria - Lower Austria

Members and the press have loved this glorious dry Austrian white since it arrived; our Wine Champions tasters loved it, too! ‘Energetic, peachy, slightly spritzy and very refreshing’, it's a field blend of 80% grüner veltliner, 15% müller-thurgau and 5% muskateller; a blossom-scented, brilliant-value joy that no fridge door should be without.

I feel like this is Austria's tasty alternative to a slightly spritzy vinho verde. It's a fun and enlivening "house wine" that always deserves a place in your fridge. A traditional field blend of grapes led by grüner veltliner and supported by müller-thurgau and muskateller, it delivers waves of grapefruit, bites of crisp green apple and sugar-dusted lemon rind.

Ring the changes this summer with this modish, predominantly grüner veltliner Austrian field blend, topped up with a dollop of müller-thurgau and a dash of muskateller, all fermented together. The result is a stunning summery sip with masses of vibrant, racy, green apple zing.

Whether you're at the event itself or watching at home, a day of tennis or cricket wouldn't be the same without a parade of picnicky snacks and a glass of cool white wine. The wine needs to be versatile enough to stand up to the variety of snacks, and light enough for a day's sipping. This breezy mix of stone fruit , citrus and floral tones , with 11.5 % alcohol, hits the right notes.

Could 2025 be the summer of Gemischter Satz? I hope so because there’s lots to love about Vienna’s traditional white field blend, a mixture of different varieties, cultivated on the slopes that surround the city and harvested together. Gemischter Satz can sometimes be a little boozy for summer sipping but this new-wave wine, majority Grüner Veltliner, dials in at a picnic-friendly 11.5%. Pithy and fresh, there’s juicy grapefruit, white pepper with a delicate textural charm.

A sparky, refreshing, grüner veltliner-led field blend with lashings of vibrant, racy, sweet green-apple zing.

A playful Austrian field blend (grapes co-planted and co-fermented), bursting with lime, crunchy apple and a tiny kiss of sweetness. Laid-back sipping, sorted.

The kind of thing you’d be delighted to come across in a Heuriger, or wine tavern, in the hills above Vienna, this a cracking, unoaked white that’s perfect for spring. Refreshingly light bodied and spritzy, it’s based on Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s most distinctive variety, with support from 15% Müller-Thurgau and 5% Muskateller. Juicy, tangy and thirst-quenchingly refreshing, with appealing lime, passion fruit and boiled sweets’ flavours and a touch of balancing sweetness.

Hazily aromatic, like a summer meadow, this very appealing white comes from an impeccable Austrian producer. The grapes are mostly grüner veltliner with a dash of müller thurgau and of muskateller.

Vienna’s signature wine is vibrant, refreshing and layered, with aromatic orchard fruits, orange blossom and white pepper.

Racy and lively. Amazing energy. Is this because of dissolved carbon dioxide, I wonder? Not long but a really fun, easy aperitif. Good value. JancisRobinson.com
