Faugères, Maison Jaune, Domaine Bardi d'Alquier 2021

Red Wine from France - Languedoc
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Maison Jaune is grenache-dominated with some syrah, aged in used barrels for a year. There is old-vine concentration here, richly textured, yet soft and long. Lovely now, and with sweetness of fruit in 2021, but has the ability to develop further in bottle. Drink from 2024 to 2030. 14%

Domaine Bardi d'Alquier

This is one of the historic properties in Faugères and one of the first to bottle its own wine. Alquier was also among the first to plant syrah in a big way and it is this grape variety that forms the major part in blends.

At the death of the father, the estate eventually split in two. The Society followed Jean-Michel and his wife Véronique who, over the last twenty years, worked tirelessly to create one of the very best estates in the Languedoc. After the 2018 vintage the Alquiers sold the property to Monsieur and Madame Bardi de Fourtou but the Alquiers have stayed on to consult.

The 12-hectare estate mainly planted with massal-selected syrah with grenache noir (which is over 60 years old), mourvèdre, carignan, with two of the hectares given over to the white varieties grenache blanc, marsanne and roussanne. Jean-Michel's love of Burgundy and Côte-Rôtie led him to pursue a quite different route in his two top reds. Bastides is made from old vines and is 60% syrah with 40% grenache in a typical year. The wine is aged for a year in mostly new oak. Maison Jaune is aged in older casks and has less syrah and more grenache.
