Henschke Mount Edelstone Eden Valley Shiraz 2018 100ml

Henschke's ‘second wine', is a truly special bottle: another incredibly ageworthy red which is a testament to the top-tier of Australian fine wine. This has complex notes of earth, cassis, with spicy lifted pepper and soy. The palate is rich, full and approachable now, with ample ripe tannins, focused acidity and huge generosity of fruit. At once big, bold and luxurious but also elegant and fine. 2018 was a truly spectacular vintage for South Australia, and one which some winemakers said was the best they ever worked. It also marks 150 years since the foundation of Henschke, making this a particularly special buy.

Australia

Château Haut Bailly, Pessac-Léognan 2017 100ml

A beautifully crafted wine displaying dense, dark-fruit character. The tannins are discreet and suave, not unlike Robert Wilmers, owner of the château for many years until his passing shortly after harvest. The wine is a fine tribute to the man.

France

Chianti Classico, Gran Selezione, Vigna del Sorbo Fontodi 2018 100ml

Stunning Gran Selezione in a fantastic vintage and now hitting its stride, with aromas of ripe mulberries, red plums, herbs and leather. Invigorating and fresh with concentrated, rich fruit, velvety tannins and a savoury character on the finish.

Italy

Hermitage La Chapelle, Paul Jaboulet Aîné 2015 100ml

This legendary wine comes from only the best plots – especially the Bessards and Méal vineyards – and the oldest vines go into the Chapelle blend. The 2015 still has power, weight and great length of flavour after a decade and there's no hurry to drink up. Decant if you do want to savour it.

France

López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva, Rioja 2013 100ml

Legendary Rioja from this acutely traditional bodega in Haro. The 2013 Tondonia red is 70% tempranillo with 20% garnacha and 10% graciano and mazuelo combined. The reserva spends six years in barrel (just one would satisfy the DO regulations) and several more than the required two in bottle before release. The result is a balanced, pure and savoury style, with crushed cherries, forest floor and wild herbs. Long and complete.

Spain

Ridge Monte Bello 2016 100ml

Winemaker Eric Baugher stated that he felt this vintage really encapsulates the 'wonderful complexity expressing the unique character of our limestone soils and mountain vineyards.' This youthful wine reveals expressive damson, cassis and vanilla oak aromas. Its firm young tannins and bright acidity support the flavours to perfection, offering concentrated blackberry, plum and clove notes. A truly elegant mountainside California wonder.
