Hunter's Estate Marlborough Chardonnay 2023
White Wine from New Zealand - Marlborough
The 2023 vintage of this wine is a stellar example of serious Marlborough chardonnay from James MacDonald, winemaker for Hunters. The nose is vibrant and precise, with layers of flinty minerality, citrus zest, and delicate notes of toasted spice and brioche from ten months of ageing in French oak, and a subtle hint of sea spray. The palate is beautifully focused and linear, driven by pristine acidity that enhances its stone-fruit character. Lemon curd, grilled peach, toasted hazelnut, salted almond and nutmeg unfurl with textured, almost chalky minerality, giving a compelling energy and drive, adding complexity without compromising the wine’s remarkable poise and clarity. Sourced from the Rapaura and Omaka sub-regions, the fruit is predominantly the Mendoza clone, known for its small berries and concentrated flavour and the 2023 vintage was notably cool and long, allowing for slow, even ripening. It has resulted in wines of exceptional balance and detail. While utterly delicious now, it has the structure and intensity to reward careful cellaring over the next few years. Pair with roasted poultry, creamy risottos, or grilled smoked fish.
