Lismore Estate Reserve Chardonnay, Greyton 2024
White Wine from South Africa - Cape South Coast
One of the best chardonnays in South Africa, described by more than one critic as the Corton-Charlemagne of the Cape, this comes exclusively from Samantha O’Keefe’s estate in cool-climate Greyton – from vineyards she planted in the foothills of the Sonderend Mountain Range, on decomposed shale over clay. Wine of Origin Greyton exists solely because of the tenacity and vision of Sam, and it has proved itself to be an exciting terroir for chardonnay (as well as for syrah, viognier, and roussanne). After an incredibly challenging 2023 vintage from a rainfall perspective, ‘2024 was rainbows and unicorns,’ says Sam – delivering moderation in everything – and her chardonnay this vintage is (again) stunning, balancing opulence with elegance. Vivid and refreshing, if not as linear and racy as the 2023, a modest proportion of new French oak (30%) is interwoven with the intense citrus flavour, bringing subtle toast and spice to the shimmering fruit. This is flinty and salty and magnificently long on the finish.
