LS Merchants Margaret River Chenin Blanc 2024

Chenin blanc has deep roots in Western Australia, though for many years it flew under the radar, with vines pulled out as fashions shifted. Today, it’s enjoying a quiet renaissance, thanks in part to producers like Dylan Arvidson of LS Merchants, who are championing the grape’s potential in Margaret River’s coastal climate. Dylan’s approach is intuitive and hands-off, and this 2024 release, from fruit grown just outside the winery, shows exactly why chenin deserves attention. Picked in three separate passes to build layers of flavour, this vintage is a touch rounder and more textural than the tauter 2023, but still buzzing with freshness and energy. The nose is bright and inviting, with notes of honeysuckle, white berry and preserved lemon, while the palate is crisp and gently phenolic, offering flavours of bitter lemon, ginger and a lovely chalky minerality, with a saline edge and fresh, pithy texture. This is thoughtful, vibrant winemaking, delivering a wine that’s complex but totally drinkable; a brilliant example of why chenin blanc is quietly becoming one of the region’s most exciting white grapes.
