LS Merchants Wilyabrup Margaret River Chardonnay 2023

This remarkably elegant chardonnay from the prime Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River was a surefire Wine Champion in 2026’s blind tastings. ‘It’s on the oaky spectrum, where you have toast, butter and nuttiness,’ said one, ‘but it has the structure to support it. A delicious wine.’ Alongside the nuttiness there are notes of flint, brioche and lemon curd on the nose. Produced using a mix of new and old French oak puncheons, the wine is textured, fine and succulent. The acidity is pristine but not at all austere and ties everything together remarkably well, with notes of lemon, apricot and pear fruit, five-spice and candied lime peel on the palate. This is a masterful take on Australian chardonnay and a must-try for lovers of the grape.
