Perhaps the most fragrant and immediately expressive of Mac Forbes' pinots that I have tasted, reflective of either the vintage, his increased winemaking confidence or both. This opens with lifted aromas of red cherry, cranberry and redcurrant, threaded with delicate spice, nutmeg and a subtle savoury note reminiscent of za’atar. Mac Forbes’ wines have long championed restraint and finesse, sometimes to the point of challenging those seeking overt generosity, yet the 2022 Ferguson pinot feels like a turning point. There is greater confidence and ease here, without sacrificing the purity that defines the house style. The palate is supple and succulent, shaped by fine, gentle tannins and vibrant, crystalline acidity that carries the fruit effortlessly. Layers of fresh red berries unfurl through the mid palate before a slowly building finish marked by cranberry brightness and a touch of star anise. Ethereal yet grounded, this captures the cool sensitivity of Woori Yallock beautifully. The most complete and satisfying expression of this vineyard I have tasted from Mac Forbes to date, combining elegance with genuine warmth and soul. Worth decanting if possible.
