Mahi Wrekin Single Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir 2023
Marlborough is a particularly exciting region for top-tier pinot noir, with quality improving every year and a number of sites starting to show that they can produce superior examples. One such site is The Wrekin vineyard in Marlborough's Southern Vallleys. Brian Bicknell is somewhat of an icon of the region and his label Mahi has been known to produce some of the most pure, unadulterated and good quality examples of Marlborough fine wine. His Wrekin single vineyard pinot noir does justice to this wonderful vineyard and demonstrates the unique character of the site. The nose shows wile strawberries and raspberries, with notes of cedar and a hint of cinnamon spice. the wine is produced using Tonnellerie de Mercurey barrels, around 14% of which were new, impacting a deliciously firm tannin and hint of vanilla, albeit well hidden by the powerful fruit. The structure is very impressive here, with those firm tannins being balanced by a pristine and dart-like acidity. The finish shows notes of rose petals. Very impressive and a single vineyard to watch, seen through the eyes of an excellent producer.
