Mullineux 'Granite' Syrah, Swartland 2019
Red Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
Chris and Andrea Mullineux are legends of the South African wine scene and were key components of the Swartland Revolution that kickstarted the fame of this previously overlooked region. Their single-terroir range, including this 'Granite', is their flagship selection of syrah and their 2019s are starting to shine after some time in bottle. Sourced from a single parcel of 24-year-old vines on the decomposed granite slopes of the Paardeberg mountain the wine is whole-bunch fermented in open-top 500-litre French oak barrels before a further 12 months in oak (50% new) and 10 months in 2,000-litre foudres. The resulting wine is a hugely concentrated and opaque syrah that's just starting to unfurl with aromas of blackberry, wild cherry, black olive tapenade, clove and violet with a full, powerful palate that builds and lingers on the palate. Ideal alongside some red meat now or stored for another 5 to 10 years to increase those meaty, gamey aromas.
