Mullineux Syrah Six-Bottle Vertical Mixed Case 2023 to 2018
Mullineux Swartland Syrah is a reference point for Swartland syrah – arguably the reference point, given it is approaching its twentieth anniversary (predating the other great syrahs of the region) and since it weaves together an array of different vineyard sources. In so doing this wine captures – and celebrates – the diversity of the Swartland’s soils, from the decomposed granite which Andrea Mullineux says brings ‘length, freshness and perfume’, to the hard-core rocky schist which contributes structure, to iron-rich soils which add mid-palate weight, to quartz for ‘a bit more white spice.’ Chris Mullineux describes this wine as ‘the core of who we are,’ defining as it does the Mullineux view of the Swartland. Since the inaugural 2008 vintage, the wine has always been built on a sizeable proportion of whole bunch fermentation (50-90% crushed whole cluster, depending on the year), and it has always been fermented in upright wooden vessels, enjoying an extended maceration before being pressed to 500-litre barrels for the first year and then to foudre for further maturation. It ages incredibly, as last year’s 10-year-on South African New Wave tasting (of the 2015 vintage) illustrated. We are delighted to present this unique vertical case for members – comprising one bottle each of the 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018 vintages – which has been put together exclusively for The Wine Society, with stock shipped from Mullineux via their UK importers. All of the wines were most recently tasted at the Mullineux’s Roundstone farm in February 2026 by our buyer Victoria Mason MW and the tastings notes below are from that tasting.
