Patatsfontein Steen, Montagu 2024
White Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
Winemaker Reenen Borman describes 2024 as ‘a lovely vintage up in the mountains’ of Montagu, from where this unique chenin blanc hails - one of the only vineyards left on this mountain. With an intense perfume of lemon verbena and yellow grapefruit, this also shows a touch of gunflint on the nose. There is scintillating focus, with bracing acidity, and lemon zest and almond nougat flavours on the palate. Textured and waxy, with some citrus-pith grip on the salty, long finish. This grip is all the site, Reenen explains; at 800m above sea level, Montagu experiences a very high diurnal range but is as hot as the Swartland during the day, and it’s a poor site of shale with no topsoil so the vines struggle. Total production is tiny at around just 1,500 bottles. It is a singular chenin and one we wanted to include in our focus on the Cape's chenin terroirs.
