Red Wine from Spain - Canary Islands & Balearics
This is a graceful red, with notes of wild cherry with lavender and white pepper, mineral and tense. Made from a blend of local red and white grapes, the old vines lend unexpected structure and tension beneath the joyful fruit. It's a great match for squid, so popular on the balearic Islands, often fried and served with potatoes, though battered or breadcrumbed is delicious too. Piedra Fluida are one of our Wine Society Pioneers, valued for their commitment to sustainability. Certified organic as well as for integrated production, they have regenerated old, abandoned vineyards on Tenerife, dry farming 75% and drip irrigating others, while collecting rainwater. Non-synthetic treatments are applied only where needed and are audited. They grow cover crops to add organic compost and produce their own compost too. Biodiversity is encouraged, with native plants nurtured, beehives installed, and mixed cropping employed so that vines share space with fruit trees and vegetables. They also actively collaborate with Fundación Foresta on environmental and community initiatives. One example is the Tenerife Renace project, which focused on reforestation following the 2023 wildfires. As part of this initiative, we contributed €1 for every bottle sold of their Magec wine to support the replanting of Canary Island pine trees.
