Thanks to his single-minded focus on chenin blanc – when it comes to white wine – for the last quarter of a century, Bruwer Raats is now known as ‘the chenin king’ and his Old Vine Polkadraai Hills chenin is one of his most famous wines. From three old vineyards in the Polkadraai, on decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone, the 2024 edition is generous in its fruit expression, with ripe yellow apple and juicy conference pear. The natural concentration of the vintage is balanced with the characteristic refreshment and precision of the Raats’ house style. There is bright, enlivening acidity underpinning the wine, which is gently oaked (50% fermented and matured in French oak, 50% in stainless steel) and drinking deliciously now.
