The Society's South African Pinotage-Syrah, Coastal Region 2024
South Africa`s very own grape pinotage takes the lead in this fresh, fruity Cape Blend of young Stellenbosch syrah with older bush-vine pinotage from Swartland. The grapes were whole-berry fermented and the syrah grapes were lightly crushed and gently handled in the cellar to produce a fruit-driven red with soft tannins. The blend is 66% pinotage, 34% syrah.
Gamay, Jacques Dépagneux, Comté Tolosan 2024
A juicy, fruit-driven gamay from the south of France, with all the exuberance of youth. Best drunk lightly chilled.
The Society's Portuguese Red, Península de Setúbal 2024
From family-owned Casa Ermelinda Freitas, south-east of Lisbon, this friendly red combines local castelão, which is all juicy red fruits, with Alicante Bouschet, which brings darker black fruit and fleshiness. Casa Ermelinda Freitas is a significant family-owned company established in 1920 and run by successive generations of dynamic women. This is a supple, juicy red to enjoy on its own or with a host of dishes. A good, honest, easy-drinking house red which has proven a real hit with Society members.
Château de la Grave ‘Caractère', Côtes de Bourg 2021
From a member-favourite estate from the perfumed 2021 vintage this has a fragrant bouquet of plums, tar and vanilla, with a layered, juicy texture on the palate, concentrated and well balanced with grainy, ripe tannins on the finish. Remarkable value. We are excited to say that the Bassereaus are one of our Wine Society Pioneers for their focus on sustainable methods in wine production. They manage water use carefully, treating waste water and discharging it back, all winery waste is composted, dry hedges are built. As winners of our 2024 Climate & Nature fund, de la Grave will use our funds to help diversify and move away from a monoculture. One project involves planting fruit, olive and truffle trees, establishing pre-orchards which will combine fruiting trees with meadows for grazing and breeding their sheep and horses. They are supported by the local biodynamic organisation and share their knowledge with other producers, and their area was chosen for ‘blue corridors’ thanks to ponds and waterways being reopened for animals who need that environment to thrive and migrate. this makes a wonderful partner for roasted spring lamb shoulder or leg with all the trimmings, and is superb with a thick-cut, well-seared but still rosy rib-eye steak.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Vigna Corvino 2024
Rocco Pasetti makes the most attractive example we know of this Italian classic. Juicy and bright and bursting with ripe cherry and red plum fruit, with a graphite edge on the finish. A deliciously fulfilling example of this great grape. It's absolutely perfect for enjoying with pizza or pasta dishes of all kinds.
Undurraga Cauquenes Estate Carignan 2023
From 60-year-old, unirrigated bush vines, this ripe black-fruit scented Chilean carignan maintains a wonderful freshness and firmness on the palate. Ideal with the fatty cuts of oxtail, shoulder of lamb or pork.
