Settlement Ashmore Single Vineyard Marlborough Riesling 2021
New Zealand makes some of the world's most underappreciated riesling. The quality can be utterly outstanding but it is very much in the shadow of the very successful sauvignon blanc produced. This example demonstrates the best of Marlborough riesling terroir, seen through the eyes of a winemaker with German heritage. Steve Planthaber gets this fruit from the Ashmore vineyard, which is planted behind his parents-in-law's house, who conveniently happen to be the Sutherlands of Dog Point. Planted in the late 1990s these vines now produce fruit with great concentration of flavour, which Steve harnesses in this superbly aromatic and serious wine. Harvested and whole bunch pressed into stainless steel. A generous and classically styled dry riesling, which has richness and impressive focus. The nose shows notes of peach blossom, orange peel and honey. The palate is full but precise, with lime peel, oranges and honeysuckle on the finish. Ideal for lovers of classic dry rieslings at the richer end of the spectrum.
