Fine Cape Reds Trio
Wines included
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch 2015
The real deal in a top Cape vintage. Kanonkop are masters of the pinotage grape, and this is absolutely delicious: concentrated and rich, savoury and spicy with deep flavours of blackberry and plum and velvety tannins. Still a baby, but able to be enjoyed now with the help of a decanter and hearty fare. Just hitting its drinking window now, but decant this before serving.
Porseleinberg Syrah, Swartland 2022
A linear, tightly-packed Porseleinberg – lithe and slender with tonnes of energy, and with that signature stony grip on the finish. While a little shy at first, it opens up to reveal spicy fennel salami, dried bay leaf and rosemary notes, and violet-infused perfume with time in glass. The fruit profile starts in the red spectrum – tangy red cherry and raspberry, with a citrussy, pink-grapefruit tang – and moves towards wild blueberries, with a wonderful peppery tension on the mid-palate and fine-grained, mouth-coating tannins. Owned by Boekenhoutskloof and farmed from 2010 to 2025 by winegrower Callie Louw, Porseleinberg is one of South Africa's greatest and most sought-after wines.
Rustenberg Peter Barlow, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch 2022
Rustenberg Peter Barlow is a regal cabernet sauvignon from a single vineyard on this centuries-old Stellenbosch property. The first vintage ever made was the 1996 and recently South Africa buyer Victoria drank the 1999 which was in an incredible place at 27 years’ old! The 2022 vintage was picked the last week of April which is the latest they have ever picked this cab. While still only four years' old, it's accessible and charmingly delicious now, like so many of the best 2022s from Stellenbosch. With ripe black berry and black cherry fruit, cedar spice and liquorice, this full-bodied red has seamless, fruit-wrapped tannins and a long, fruit-driven finish.
