Strange Bru Fernão Pires, Western Cape 2024

5.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
Fernão pires - sometimes also known as Maria Gomes - is native to Portugal and is one of the country's most planted grapes. It has travelled to shores further afield, though, including to South Africa, where it makes this aromatic, characterful wine from old vines planted in 1987 and certified by the Old Vine Project. Rarely seen on its own but rather in a blend, this single varietal wine from the Western Cape is a real discovery for lovers of vibrant, fruit-driven whites. Aromas of blossom, rose petals, orange peel and lemongrass lead to an almost tropical profile on the palate, of pineapple, pink grapefruit and a whisper of mint. Refreshing and bright, and appealingly modest in alcohol, this has a salty note on the finish. It would be delicious with Thai-inspired dishes, or simply as an aperitif.
