Powerful, rich and exotic syrah from the man who lost the rights to his own name. Kevin Arnold was the acclaimed winemaker at Waterford, whose top wine was and still is named after him. Following his departure from the business, unbeknownst to him, there was one thing he couldn't take with him... his name. After a few years in limbo without a winery or a source of grapes he sent out a call for help. And who should answer than call? None other than Chris Alheit. Freeing up some cellar space in the Upper Hemel en Aarde and sourcing grapes from a few top estates such as Reyneke and the Karbib farm (home to Lukas van Loggerenberg's Graft) he's been able to produce a wine under a new brand 'The Family'. On a visit in 2023 I met Kevin for the first time and was touched by his story, and his wine is a testament not just to his abilities as a winemaker, but also the generosity of the South African wine industry. A unique beast this syrah requires patience. It's full-throttle in the best sense with huge concentration and tannin weight that will take a few years to resolve but this is sure to be one of the finest syrahs in South Africa in a few years' time. Don't miss it.
