The Society's Case for Bordeaux
Wines included
The Society's Exhibition Haut-Médoc 2016
Ripe, polished and beautifully balanced Bordeaux, with attractive notes of damson and vanilla on the palate. This is a delicious left bank claret from Château Beaumont, a favourite Bordeaux of members for many years.
The Wine Society's Generation Series Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2020
A fragrant, plummy and satisfying claret from member favourite Château de Pitray, this unique blend was made from the very best grapes of the vintage. Ripe and intense, yet with freshness too. Partially aged in French oak barrels, the wine reveals notes of damsons, dark chocolate and a hint of liquorice on the finish. For more than 40 years we've worked with the de Boigne family and it is a delight to have done so again for this Generation Series wine to celebrate our 150th Anniversary. this is a bespoke blend made from the cream of the 2020 vintage crop. The quality is similar to, though arguably more premium than, the ‘Madame’ cuvée that is normally considered the château’s top wine, and which we offer en primeur most vintages. I was fortunate enough to be given first access to the best tanks and barrels, and was given carte blanche to put together the Generation Castillon from the excellent 2020 vintage. The Society's Reserve Claret, Côtes de Bordeaux 2021
Our Reserve Claret is made from vineyards in the Côtes de Bordeaux by Jean de Boigne and Nina Mitjavile at member favourite Château de Pitray. This medium-bodied wine is a merlot-based blend with an inviting nose of juicy dark-berry fruit, complemented by good tannin structure and a fresh note of black pepper. The Society buys the wine after harvest, but it is only released when ready for drinking. On the label we depict an element from a Bordeaux landmark, a column on the great Grand Théâtre, a hub of the city's cultural life.
The Wine Society's Generation Series Graves Blanc 2021
The Generation Graves Blanc 2021 is a classic example of the style of dry white Bordeaux that was popular in Britain in the early to mid-twentieth century. For our Generation Series range to celebrate The Society`s 150th Anniversary we collaborated with one of Bordeaux`s most respected château owners and négociants, Dourthe. The result is a classically-styled dry white Bordeaux which displays mouthwatering notes of white peach and citrus, and a long aromatic finish. It can be enjoyed with a wide variety of fish and seafood dishes, poultry, flambéd chicken livers and goats cheese. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
The Society's Claret 2022
This friendly and fresh-tasting claret is one of The Wine Society`s most consistently popular wines. Supplied for over a quarter of a century by family-owned Maison Sichel, the bespoke blend varies from vintage to vintage, but merlot takes the lead role, and the wine is made without any oak to avoid masking its bright, red and black fruit flavours. This is made to be drunk young, on its own or with a wide variety of dishes. The new label for this perennial favourite shows three muses that can also be seen on the Grand Theatre opera house in Bordeaux itself. The 2022 is a blend of 58% merlot, 34% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot and 1% malbec.
The Society's Bordeaux Sauvignon 2023
Fresh and aromatic, this is pure Bordeaux sauvignon made without the use of oak in a crisp and fruity modern style that allows its fruit to shine. It is blended from a range of sources according to the vintage to achieve a consistent level of complexity. Versatile enough to enjoy with or without a meal, it is bottled with a screwcap closure to retain maximum freshness. The label carries an image of a great Bordeaux landmark, the Pont de Pierre bridge that crosses the River Garonne in the heart of the city.
