The Society's Exhibition Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

3.538461400 star rating 13 Reviews
Australia's Margaret River is home to some of the world's finest cabernet sauvignon so it's been a pleasure to work with Vasse Felix, the founding winery of the region, to produce this example exclusively for members. The nose is wonderfully inviting, silky and black-fruit driven, while the palate is full-bodied, pristine and elegant.

Vasse Felix

The earliest pioneer of Margaret River winemaking, Vasse Felix was established in 1967, founded by a doctor, Tom Cullity, who searched relentlessly in the area for just the right place to plant his vines. He found it a Wilyabrup and planted eight acres that remain the heart of the Vasse Felix estate to this day. In 1987 it was purchased by the Holmes à Court family, and they have expanded the vineyard area while maintaining the commitment to quality that was always in place. After all, Tom Cullity's vision was a good one –“to make the best possible wine.”

Let’s consider now a 100% cabernet sauvignon made by one of the pioneers of grape (and especially cabernet) production in that part of Western Australia – Vasse Felix. This example shows off Australia’s fingerprints when applied to this variety and turns up the volume on its fruit elements but offers less of the savoury contrast than, say, versions from Bordeaux. Juicy and full, it contains minty blackcurrant and prune flavours partnered by good acidity, soft tannin and hints of cocoa, vanilla, allspice and bell pepper.
