Biferno Rosso Riserva, Palladino 2019
A blend of montepulciano, aglianico and trebbiano grapes traditionally grown in Molise, south of Abruzzo in Italy. This combination has created a rich, cherry-scented wine with the aglianico grape adding some blackberry notes. It has spent 18 months in large oak barrels, giving a touch of vanilla on the finish.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Vigna Corvino 2023
A Wine Champion for 2025 after our extensive blind tastings, this was judged a full-bodied ‘pizza wine’ with a ‘lovely sour-cherry bite’, ‘liquorice and plenty of weight and spice.’ Rocco Pasetti makes the most attractive example we know of this gutsy Italian classic, and the 2023 put in a commanding performance this year. A juicy, fulfilling and fabulous Champion.
The Society's Australian Shiraz 2022
Showing ‘serious class’, this vibrant, bold, black-fruited shiraz showed Bleasdale’s remarkable track record for making wines that consistently overperform and was unsurprisingly judged to be one of our 2025 Wine Champions. A rare administrative error saw this placed in a more expensive section of its tasting, and it still won after a retaste! Textbook shiraz at a party price.
The Society's South African Pinotage-Syrah, Coastal Region 2024
South Africa`s very own grape pinotage takes the lead in this fresh, fruity Cape Blend of young Stellenbosch syrah with older bush-vine pinotage from Swartland. The grapes were whole-berry fermented and the syrah grapes were lightly crushed and gently handled in the cellar to produce a fruit-driven red with soft tannins. The blend is 66% pinotage, 34% syrah.
Dirt Track Shiraz, Swartland 2024
Full-bodied spicy shiraz packed with plum and blackberry fruit, made for us by one of the instrumental players in South Africa’s new wave, Duncan Savage.
The Society's Douro Red 2023
Portugal's Douro Valley is not only one of Europe's most beautiful landscapes but is home to a rich history of grape growing. Historically the region has been famous for its fortified wines, but in the last few decades the increase in production of table wines has been very well received. This wine is a great-value introduction into the excellent quality now being produced from native grape varieties, and captures the generosity, personality and charm of the table wines of the Douro. Produced especially for The Wine Society by Vinhos Invencível, a small winery run by Douro local Rita Marques and South African Marc Kent, of Boekenhoutskloof fame. A blend of mostly old bush-vines, co-planted and co-fermented, this is as wild and unique as the Douro itself. Predominantly touriga franca, touriga nacional and tinta roriz, from vineyards at different altitudes to capture both freshness and concentration of fruit. This is plush and inviting on the nose, with notes of mocha, dark bramble fruits and violets, typical of touriga nacional. The palate has a lovely, full structure, with juicy blueberries, damsons and sloes all joined by a twist of cracked black pepper and a hint of cinnamon on the back palate. There is intensity here, but the wine finishes lifted and fresh, taking all the wild charm of the region and presenting it in an easy-to-drink way.
