Zwartwater Estate White, Paardeberg 2024
White Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
The historic Lammershoek Estate – next door to Eben Sadie on the Swartland’s Paardeberg mountain – has seen multiple owners and many rebrands in the last three decades, but stability has finally arrived in the form of the Johannes family. With the young Stefan Johannes at the helm, there is a newfound vision and sense of purpose at the property as he launches his debut 2024 vintage estate wines. The white is built on chenin blanc, the jewel in the Paardeberg’s crown, with a small amount of viognier bringing texture and breadth, and hárslevelű and marsanne adding further complexity and subtle floral aromatics. Flavours of golden apple, yellow grapefruit, peach skin, and honeycomb have a lovely persistence on the palate, combining with a revitalising freshness on the finish. Maturation took place in concrete eggs (approximately one third), old barrels, and a small amount of new French oak, yielding a wine which is harmonious and complete. The wine is named ‘Zwartwater,’ in homage to Stefan’s family’s original farm in Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa. The latest in the exciting ‘next generation’ of new wave producers out of the Cape, we are delighted to be the first to bring Zwartwater into the UK.
