The Bohórquez wines have amassed a strong following with Wine Society members and the near-perfect growing conditions of the 2021 vintage further cement this small estate as one of the leading bodegas in the region. The 2021 vintage is regarded as a classic year, cooler than other recent years and with a long, even ripening season, producing beautifully balanced wines. There’s underlying freshness and lovely, gentle rose-petal aromatics behind its powerful frame. I’m thrilled to offer it to you today as a First Release.
Order by midday on Wednesday 7th January
Bohórquez is a small, focused producer – so much so that they don’t even have a cellar door – and their proximity to the prestigious Pesquera estate gives them access to some of the region’s prime sites. Rather than chasing appearances, they invest almost everything back into their vineyards and winery. In the vineyards, they encourage natural vine competition: double-density planting on the poorest soils to naturally limit yields. This boosts concentration and helps the wines express their origins, but more importantly it ensures thicker, healthier skins – something Bohórquez considers central to their style.
The 2021 blend, led by tinto fino with 12% cabernet sauvignon and 3% merlot, is aged for 15 months in new French oak and displays brambly fruit and red-cherry character alongside cedary spice and firm, powdery tannins. It’s a wine with clear ageing potential and a great buy.
