Barrio Pastores, meaning “the Shepherds' Quarter”, is Carlos Mazo's expression of the village of Aldeanueva de Ebro, produced from less than a hectare of old garnacha vines planted across two parcels, Mazaterón and Montote, both established in 1989. He picked early in 2024 in response to the rains, preserving the wine's energy, focus and moderate alcohol. Made in the same manner as all his wines, this 100% garnacha is foot-trodden and fermented with whole bunches in a large wooden vat, using spontaneous fermentation and no temperature control. After 12 days of maceration, it is matured for a further 10 months in large oak foudres. Pale in colour, light on its feet and beautifully aromatic, it offers scents of lavender, wild flowers, fennel and white pepper alongside crunchy redcurrant, raspberry and pomegranate fruit. The palate is vibrant and acid-driven, with chalky intensity, fine tannins and a distinctive sanguine, iron-rich character that adds depth and complexity. Deliciously drinkable in its youth, yet structured enough to reward short- to medium-term cellaring, this is a detailed and elegant expression of Rioja Oriental from one of the region's most exciting young growers. Drink this year to 2033. 12.5%
